The art song and cultural identity in the colonial settings of East Asia and Australia
植民地における近代音楽の帰属意識
―東アジアとオーストラリアの芸術歌曲の場合

This research project investigates the development of the art song in Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan from 1900 to 1950. The case of Australia, as a settler country and former colony of Britain, makes a useful comparator. It is argued that whereas there is ambivalence about the adoption of a foreign music, the creation of songs in one’s native language set to western style music was highly significant in the formation of a modern culture in the era of colonial modernity. We conclude that these processes were strikingly similar in all the countries studied. We address contemporary discourses about art song, the urge to incorporate local musical elements, and the process of canon formation whereby many songs of the period have been erased from historical memory.
