The Research Centre for Japanese Traditional Music is pleased to announce an afternoon of open lessons for beginners on the Japanese instruments koto and shamisen. This is designed primarily for teachers at junior high schools in Kyoto who will be required to teach Japanese music with the change in curriculum from fiscal 2002, but a small number of places have been reserved for applicants from the general public.

Japanese-style hall and auditorium of Kyoto Art Center, close to Shijoo-Karasuma intersection. A five-minute walk north of Shijoo on Muromachi-doori.

Lessons on both the koto (13-stringed flat zither) and shamisen (3-stringed long-necked lute), with forty participants divided into two groups. The majority of places have been reserved for teachers at city schools in Kyoto.
Five places only open to the general public.
